BMW Planning to Grow Capacity at South Carolina Plant

BMW is the leading manufacturer of luxury cars in the America (the largest market
for premium autos), and the fact is, more and more luxury car drivers in the
U.S. and abroad are choosing BMW over its competitors. To
meet surging demand, BMW, of course, has to ramp up production. Last year, they
took it 73-percent over 2010, hitting an all-time high. Anticipating even
greater demand in 2012 and beyond, BMW has recently announced another
investment strategy aimed at expanding the capacity of their manufacturing
facility in South Carolina.
In the 18 years the plant has been open, BMW has expanded capacity four times. Among the many new BMWs produced are the BMW 318i, BMW Z3, BMW Z4, BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X3. Employment, which started at a modest 500, now tallies up at well over 7,000.
BMW plans to invest $900,000,000 into the plan from now until 2014 -- this being their fifth expansion effort. And, by the end of 2012, they plan to add another 300 jobs. "...This will allow us to produce 350,000 units in Spartanburg [North Carolina] in the midterm," explains Frank-Peter Arndt, Member, BMW AG Board of Management. To support spiking global demand for the new BMW X model range (and specifically large-scale production of the new BMW X3), the Bavarian automaker previously invested $750,000,000 into the plant, 2008-2010.
